This Engineer/Technician position will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, servicing, and providing essential technical support for processing equipment in the FLEx Oral Solid Dosage (OSD) area for clinical drug product manufacturing. Located in Rahway NJ, the FLEx OSD area supports the formulation and manufacturing of oral products intended for critical clinical trials.
The area is inclusive of the following processes: milling, blending, tableting, film coating, roller compaction, and hot melt extrusion. Equipment uniqueness and complexity varies and often includes isolators, dedicated dust collectors, and wash-in-place systems to limit operator exposure.
A significant increase in the number of pipeline programs necessitates a need for a potential 2nd shift to support clinical supply and product development. This position is primarily intended for 1st shift, but batch activity may necessitate some off-shift support.
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge and hands-on experience of Electrical / Mechanical systems, Rotating equipment, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), electrical drawings, and troubleshooting & maintenance techniques. In addition to technical expertise, this individual will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to train and upskill team members to ensure operational excellence in a highly regulated, drug product manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor technical personnel specializing in electrical and mechanical technologies related to pharmaceutical processing equipment, fostering skill development and best practices within the team.
Diagnose and troubleshoot complex manufacturing equipment issues. Utilize P&IDs, electrical schematics, diagrams, equipment manuals, mechanical drawings etc.
Collaborate with equipment operators to identify and recommend enhancements for equipment operation and changeovers; prepare parts modification sketches and utilize basic fabrication techniques as needed.
Review and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance activities, providing constructive input for continuous improvement efforts; observe equipment performance and implement necessary corrective actions. Collaborate effectively with mechanics, technicians and vendors/OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) as they perform the work.
Proficiently operate testing instruments, including multimeters, calipers, tachometers, and anemometers, adhering to NIST calibration standards.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of UL ratings, SISTEMA, NRTL testing protocols, and implement energy control procedures, including Lock Out/Tag Out safety measures.
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams—including engineering, quality assurance, and operations—to optimize equipment performance and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing equipment reliability and manufacturing efficiency.
Support the installation and testing equipment to ensure operational requirements and compliance with industry standards.
Maintain clear and effective communication with team members and leadership regarding maintenance issues, providing timely reports and proactive solutions to enhance operational effectiveness.
Qualifications:
Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
7 years of hands-on experience in electrical/mechanical maintenance pertaining to rotating equipment, preferably in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
Hands-on experience in diagnosing equipment issues, performing repairs, replacing broken or defective parts, and returning equipment to operation.
General computer skills including MS office.
Strong understanding of P&IDs, electrical schematics, and the ability to interpret technical documents for troubleshooting and repair.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
Ability to train and mentor others, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skills development.
Capable of performing procurement activities, engaging with equipment vendors.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, regulated manufacturing environment.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Availability for shift work or on-call support as needed.
Nice to Have:
Experience working in cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) compliant environments.
Familiarity of equipment testing, including commissioning, qualification, and validation testing.
Knowledge and diagnosing of Robotics, Vision systems, PLC’s, machine control systems, dual channel safety circuits, ladder logic.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Expected US salary range:
