Senior Specialist, Scientific Computing Applications

Role Overview:

As Senior Specialist of Application Support, you will oversee the delivery and management of high-performance computing (HPC) resources and tools in a Linux environment both on-premises and AWS. Your main goal is to help accelerate research by supporting advanced computing applications and workflows. You will work closely with research scientists, HPC experts from the US, Prague, and Singapore, as well as cloud engineers and technical analysts, to develop and maintain HPC applications that drive innovation in drug discovery at our company.

Your responsibilities include implementing and optimizing HPC tools on AWS to improve the experience for research scientists working on compute-intensive projects. You will also install, maintain, and upgrade HPC applications, libraries, and compilers. The ideal candidate has a strong background in HPC applications and cloud-based solutions and is committed to providing excellent support to enable research scientists to achieve impactful results. Success in this role requires both independent initiative and effective teamwork.

What will you do in this role:

Key Responsibilities

· Oversee and manage HPC applications both on-premises and AWS platforms, keeping an updated inventory and creating user-friendly guides to ensure an excellent experience for research scientists.

· Collaborate with data scientists, developers, and IT teams to integrate and support applications like Posit WorkBench and Connect, Jupyter, VS Code, AWS HealthOmics and others.

· Provide Tier3 support for Linux-based applications, including troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues.

· Monitor and manage user support tickets, ensuring timely issue resolution and clear communication with users.

· Administer Environment modules (LMOD) and manage access to HPC tools such as OpenEye, Schrodinger, MATLAB, Mathematica etc.

· Identify and implement process improvements, contributing to best practices in application support.

· Mentor junior team members, assist users with application questions, deliver training, and share practical examples.

· Work within a matrix organization, reporting to both the functional manager and the Hyderabad-based Director, and collaborating with other teams.

· Participate in project planning and execution, ensuring alignment with overall functional and project objectives.

What should you have

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Sciences or a closely related discipline. Candidates with degrees in other fields will be considered if they possess substantial and relevant experience.

· Minimum of Eight (8) years of direct experience in application management within complex Linux environments.

· Proven expertise in Linux system administration, AWS services, shell scripting (using Bash, Python, or similar languages), and advanced troubleshooting of application-related issues.

· Demonstrated skill in building and compiling applications from source on Linux platforms, including troubleshooting build dependencies and optimizing performance.

· Experience maintaining environment modules using Lmod, and familiarity with package management tools such as Spack and Easy Build is highly desirable.

· Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical findings and actionable recommendations in proposals and user guides.

· Strong problem-solving mindset and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential risks.

· Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Secondary Skills

· Hands-on experience with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of R, Posit Workbench, Connect, and Package Manager on Linux-based servers.

· Exceptional analytical abilities, with demonstrated skill in interpreting and evaluating complex data sets.

· HPC schedulers, and distributed computing concepts.

· Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments

· Experience with Solutions Development Life Cycle

· Understanding of Computational Chemistry/Biology and Bioinformatics applications

· Understanding of AI/ML/Agentic AI

· Experience with Google Cloud Platform
